Why "The Principle" Matters, Part One- To People Of Faith

Some ideas are so powerful that they have burned heretics, overturned civilizations, and turned our view of reality upside down.

The Copernican Principle is one of them......

  1. Hi Rick. The Copernican principle absolutely matters, not just to your average believer who occasionally reads a little of the Bible and goes to church on Sundays, but it really matters to those of us who dig deeper into the Bible; like priests and pastors etc…, who’s faith is solid and well established - that is, until they run into the book of Joshua.

You see, as a twenty something year old, I picked up the Bible and started to read Genesis, and of course “knowing” that the earth was millions of years old, when I read “six days” I said: “this is a fairy tale for adults, just like they say”. Needless to say, my faith in the Bible was destroyed for about a decade and a half until God drew me back. Joshua on the other hand is dangerous for the seasoned believer. Those that dig deeper into the Bible.

If you’ve been raised believing that the earth rotates and orbits, even though you are a strong believer, when you read Joshua 10:12, you must conclude, in the deep recesses of your mind, that the Bible has just been “Busted”: “These “fakers” that wrote this “non-sense”, just got caught”. “They couldn’t possible have known what we know today; that, it is the earth that rotates, not the sun”.

So then, a reasonable person who still wants to believe in God, (and not leaning on God but leaning unto their own understanding), would have to rationalize, that when God stopped the sun, He really stopped the earth’s rotation.

I believe with all my heart that this scripture, above all others, is a pivot point and a separating point between being all-in and just going through the motions. The point where the Copernican principle and Joshua 10:12 intersect is the point where doubt is injected into the believer. And doubt, is the devils foot in your door.

  2. I still don't understand how a helicopter can hover over the earth. The answer will be, "since it was already moving 1,000 mph, etc..." But the higher the helicopter goes, the faster it has to move eastward, to stay over the same object on earth, because it's making a bigger circle, than the earth itself. "Yeah, but the stuff up there is already moving faster and it takes the helicopter with it." But why is this increase in speed undetectable?

    1. The atmosphere rotates with the Earth and drags you along with it. The higher you go, the less atmosphere there is. Once you get above the atmosphere, the earth rotates below you just fine.

    2. I gather from this comment that you believe the earth rotates. The following question is not a "gotcha" question: Why do you think that once you cross the Karmen line, (an atmosphere/space demarcation 60 or so miles out), that you would stop rotating so as to now be disconnected from that rotation and be able to observe the earth rotating? What do you think would cause that?

Just so you know, I believe that we would continue to rotate all the way up to geostationary altitude. I have a 30min video on my YouTube channel, where i show what I believe happens: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7pHE0PsVBBGIyAShyyUCqQ

    3. Hugh Beaumont. Prove what? My comment: "I gather from this comment that you believe the earth rotates." Was directed to Antron Argaiv. So I'm really not sure what you are asking me to prove.

    4. Makes no difference whether the Earth is rotating or not (but your original question stated "...the stuff up there is already moving faster and it takes the helicopter with it"). By "stuff", I assumed you meant the atmosphere. That's not true, BTW, as the atmosphere gets thinner, it has less cohesion and doesn't behave like it does near the ground.

Anyway, down low, the atmosphere rotates with the Earth. As you ascend, the atmosphere gets thinner, and so its effect (dragging) on your helicopter is less, and near the Kármán line, the atmosphere has no effect on your helicopter (aside from not supporting it, but we're all friends here, so we'll ignore that little detail).

Whether the Earth rotates or not, and it doesn't matter to me, the atmosphere is thickest, and has more resistance, at the Earth's surface, and has less drag effect as you ascend.

Well, you're right, gravity would pull you back to Earth. If you have just the right tangential velocity, you would orbit.

As you go higher, assuming for the sake of argument, that the Earth is rotating beneath you, there's less and less atmosphere pulling you along. And you need to go faster as you go higher, in order to stay over the same spot...you would still have some velocity in the direction of rotation, but not as much as you would need to keep up.

  3. Hi Rick, In your written message under your video message for "the people of faith" at Theprinciplemovie.com/blog, there's a typo. It's in this sentence: "Incarnation of Jesus Christ, of the Son of God," it's the 2nd "of". Thought you might like to know.

  4. The "Bad Astronomer" himself, Phil Plait, is actually prepared to accept geocentrism (with a small 'g') as he states here https://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2010/09/14/geocentrism_seriously.html But no way will he countenance Geocentrism (with a big 'G'). Let's hope Plait turns up in Chicago for the opening in his favorite yellow "I love Heliocentrism" T Shirt waving an anti-Geocentric placard and making a ruckus: the more publicity the betta!!
