Better and Better...Now the Solar System Is Moving In Two Different Directions At Once, at Three Velocities!

We determine the peculiar velocity of the solar system relative to the frame of distant quasars, by studying the dipole anisotropy, if any, in the redshift distribution of a large sample of quasars distributed across the sky. The magnitude of the peculiar velocity thus determined turns out be extremely large (9750±550km/s; ∼3% the speed of light), and is about an order of magnitude larger than the velocity determined from the dipole anisotropy in the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation or the value determined earlier relative to the frame of distant radio sources. Even the direction of the motion is in a direction nearly opposite to the earlier determinations. The large differences in the magnitudes of inferred motion as well as their opposite signs are rather disconcerting. A genuine difference between these velocity vectors would imply highly anisotropic Universe, with anisotropy changing with epoch. This would violate the cosmological principle where the isotropy of the Universe is assumed for all epochs, and which is the basis of modern cosmological models.

Either that, or the dipoles are intrinsic.

If the dipoles are intrinsic, then the Earth is the center of the universe.

"The Principle" Explodes Heads

Among the tens of thousands of shares our trailer has generated over the past week and a half or so, one caught my eye tonight- a stunned atheist writes on his home page:

"Never have I seen such production value go into spreading creationist lies. A creationist film arguing for a GEOCENTRIC UNIVERSE. Taking scientist quotes out of context is an old trick, but this is a new low."

Now two interesting facts emerge.

First- and believe me, the finished film is even *much* better than the trailer- he has "never seen" production value in a "creationist film" to compare with "The Principle".

Bingo.

Second, he is sure that the film consists in "creationist lies", although he has of course never seen it.

"The Principle" is causing heads to explode all over the place.

Remember the "Smoking Gun" for Inflation? Guess What It Might Really Be Telling Us About Our Place In The Cosmos...

The Copernican Principle continues to pop up all over the most cutting edge observations of our universe.

Some weeks back the media trumpeted the "smoking gun" claim the inflation had been confirmed by BICEP2 observations of B mode polarization in the CMB.

Obviously, that collapsed with embarrassing rapidity- shortly after we told you so here.

But the observations must, somehow, be accounted for, and the tension between BICEP2 and Planck must somehow be resolved.

Remarkably, one proposal suggests the tension between these observations can be resolved, if we abandon the Copernican Principle:

"Here we show that it is possible for a tensor fluctuation to produce a B mode in the CMB polarization without producing any temperature fluctuation nor E-mode polarization whatsoever. The argument is relatively straightforward given the total-angular- momentum (TAM) formalism we have developed in recent work [9]. The only catch is that, as we show, the tensor fluctuation required to do this violates the Copernican principe; i.e., it implies that we occupy a preferred location in the Universe."
